I and people from old wargame designers to his radical buddies to academic colleagues to his ex-wife and children were in attendance. In his later years, he became a well respected historian, writing multiple books about the Vietnam War and WWII ( ). Indie game, not high end graphics, but one of the best I've played in the last year.Ī couple of weeks ago, I went to a kinda-wake for John Prados, the designer of Third Reich (a best-selling wargame in its time), Year of the Rat (a Vietnam wargame created shortly after the Tet offensive), and many other wargames ( ). Plus multiple romanceable characters, if you're a completist. Last play through, I saved them all except for the professor, because apparently if I become "second engineer" at end of game it unlocks potential options for future games, can't happen if he lives, and I need that for optimal outcomes.ĭon't want to go too much into the weeds, but: the same basic narrative with each replay, but events in previous replays make managing some challenges easier in later ones, and there's enough variability in the system to make exploring that interesting. Third play: Manage to save my Dad but not my Mom.Įtc. ![]() Parents still die, because there are hoops to jump through to save them. Second play: Save my friend and professor, because i know where to be. One of the game's conceits you retain knowledge of previous lives. As examples:įirst naive play: a friend dies early, so do my professor and my parents and the governor. ![]() I've been playing I Was a Teenage Exocolonist, and it's kind of a master class in designing narrative games for replay functionality. ![]()
